Aston Martin Unveils The DBX, Their First SUV

Aston Martin ushers in a bold new chapter, with the launch of their new DBX SUV. The launch of their very first SUV is a giant step for the British automotive manufacturer, which has a storied 106-year history.  Over the last decade, there has been a shift in sports car manufacturers, with them now having SUVs in their lineup. Aston Martin, with the DBX joins the likes of Porsche, Lamborghini and Maserati, traditional sports car manufacturers who now have an SUV within their stables. The reason for this is simple. SUVs simply make money; and Aston Martin, which does not have large manufacturer backing does need a car that can roll in the dough, while they still build sports cars which excite.

The new DBX is powered by a AMG-sourced 4.0 twin-turbocharged V8 engine, similar to the ones found in the DB11 and Vantage. Power at 542bhp and 700Nm of torque sounds promising, and it is, with the DBX propelling itself to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds, while top speed is rated at 291km/h. Gear swaps are done through a nine-speed torque converter automatic transmission, while an active central differential and an electronic rear limited slip differential (eDiff), takes care of how drive is transferred to all four wheels.

Aston Martin customers can look forward to an adaptive triple volume air suspension, which the British marque says, allows the DBX to tackle a wide range of terrain. The suspension is able to raise the car by 45mm and lower itself by 50mm. A newly developed 48v electric anti-roll control system (eARC) keeps the DBX in-check, and is able to deliver 1,400Nm of anti-roll force per axle, enabling their new SUV a drive similar to that of a sports car.

Everyday practicality from its 632 litre boot blends well with current Aston Martin design elements; like its upswung frameless doors and luxurious interior, bathed in full grain leather, sourced from Aston Martin’s long term partner, Bridge of Weir.

The DBX will be manufactured in Aston Martin’s second manufacturing plant, located in Wales. A new factory will also mean that the brand will be able to expand on their automobile production capabilities, and they will also be able to put focus into their Lagonda brand, which they have recently revived after a period of mothballing.

Further adding to the desirability of DBX, the first 500 owners of this landmark model will benefit from an exclusive ‘1913 Package’. Fitted with a unique fender badge, sill plaques and an inspection plaque detailing its limited build-run, each of these first examples will be personally endorsed and inspected by Aston Martin Lagonda President and Group CEO himself, Dr. Andy Palmer.
