6 Things We Need To Know About The New, Fifth-Generation Lexus RX
1) The spindle design, a symbol of Lexus, is now more three-dimensional. The brand now calls it the “spindle body”.
2) The RX’s centre of gravity has been lowered by 15mm. Overall length is the same as its predecessor, and the wheelbase is 60mm longer and tread is widened by 15mm in the front and 45mm in the rear.
3) It is 90kg lighter than the outgoing RX, due to lighter materials used on the platform's main frame, along with front fenders now made of aluminum, and B-pillars made of 2GPa (gigapascal) class hot-stamped material.
4) To improve NVH levels, it features an opening weather strip and front / rear door glass weather strip to enhance door sealing, a twin-lock structure to suppress engine hood vibration, and a high sound insulation front door glass.
5) There are no less than six variants (and more sub-variants) of the RX to choose from. Depending on the needs for each market, customers can opt for the more traditional RX 350 ICE variant with a 2.4-litre turbocharged unit and 8-speed automatic, or the tech-laden RX 500h, which uses a hybrid system and engine to deliver torque to all four wheels.
6) Top-of-the-line Lexus RX 500h F SPORT Performance will feature an “electrified” all-wheel drive system to deliver what Lexus claim as a “torque-filled driving experience” via its “DIRECT4” technology.
