Opinions were split when Mercedes-AMG decided to power the C 63 S E Performance with a 4 cylinder 2.0-litre engine paired with F1-backed electrification. Sure, 1,020Nm of peak torque was other-worldy, but some couldn’t ignore the reduction in cylinder count. Eight cylinders to four sounded like a pill too tough to swallow, which is why engineers made sure that figures were mind boggling - a 3.4 seconds sprint to 100km/h surely has to be up there with the very best.

If you insist that V8 and AMG must go hand in hand, the E 63 S 4MATIC+ Final Edition will suit you to a tee. It’s yours for $912,488 with COE, but procrastination could result in regrets because only five units (out of 999 made) will be registered for the Singapore market.

“We are proud to unveil the exclusive Mercedes-AMG E 63 S 4MATIC+ Final Edition in Singapore, which puts all that drivers love about a performance-oriented Mercedes-AMG E-Class together into a unique package. We are stoked to be able to offer customers here a handful of these Final Edition units out of the 999 available worldwide. Drivers who are fans of strong on-road and track performance, coupled with the exhilarating symphony of power from an eight-cylinder powertrain, must see what the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S 4MATIC+ Final Edition has to offer,” says Claudius Steinhoff, President and CEO, Mercedes-Benz Singapore.

Flexibility of this M177 V8 turbo motor is exemplified in this mid-sized saloon. It needs little reminding that its the same unit found in the V8 Vantage, DB11 and even the Mercedes-Maybach GLS600. But its wide breadth of abilities did not hinder engineers’ resolve to tune it towards the sportier end of the spectrum - 612bhp, 850Nm and a top speed of 300km/h are ballistic figures.

These five units are exclusively available in matt graphite grey magno paint, making this brute in a suit represent the pinnacle of Q car cool. Beneath its seemingly calm demeanour lies plenty of go-fast tricks, like variable torque distribution with a “Drift Mode” function, a 9-speed automatic with rifle bolt shift times and driving modes that goes to extreme lengths, including a “Race” setting if you’re in the mood for serious hooning.

A kerb weight of 2,010kg might sound offensive a decade ago, but in this electric age it feels very appropriate - a Polestar 2 weighs 200kg more. While big, burly V8s ploughed in front of this AMG does not result in the most dynamically-sorted combination, this old school approach wasn’t meant to please everyone. And in Singapore’s context, it needs to only keep five very well heeled customers absolutely buzzing before collection day.

Because if they are in the mood for something even more fancy, in steps the optional equipment list that adds up to another S$85,600, bringing the list price with COE right up there with the million dollar club, just like the BMW XM. Nappa leather, performance seats and a host of carbonfibre add-ons can be had with these bonuses.

The W214 E Class might have all the tech required to garner attention from diehards, but this W213 in its final V8 form factor is the definition of old school cool. Ready your cheque books and that iconic V8 symphony is yours to savour.
