Toyota’s authorised car distributor in Singapore, Borneo Motors Singapore and SP Group (SP), a household name for our utilities and a sustainable energy solutions provider in Asia Pacific, recently announced a long-term partnership to explore sustainable mobility solutions and support the adoption of electrified vehicles.

In particular, they will jointly develop and promote cost-effective and flexible electrified vehicle sharing and leasing programmes in Singapore, starting with the upcoming township development in Tengah. This will be backed by SP’s largest public, fast-charging electric vehicle charging network across the island with more than 535 charging points across 135 locations, and BMS will offer drivers a full range of electrified vehicles to ensure drivers have many pathways to reduce their transport-related carbon footprint without impacting their lifestyle and mobility needs.

Here’s a look at how this is getting us excited.

Car sharing isn’t new, but we’re stoked to see how Borneo Motors and SP will be using the pilot programme as a means of data collection to better understand consumer preferences, needs, usage and other consumption patterns to enable them to optimise future offerings.

1. Car Sharing Through KINTO x SP

The vehicle-sharing pilot is expected to launch in June 2023 with a range of up to 8 electrified Toyota models. Expect a mix of Toyota hybrid models such as the Toyota Yaris Cross, Toyota Corolla Altis, Toyota Camry, Toyota RAV4 and the Toyota Harrier, as well as Toyota Sienta and the Toyota Alphard Welcab. The range will also see Toyota’s first battery electric vehicle, the bZ4x which we had the privilege to preview.

The good news for future Tengah residents is that they’ll get to enjoy preferential rental and charging rates for the use of the programme. We hear that it’ll be accessible through the SP app which will be integrated with KINTO Share so bookings and payments can all be seamlessly sorted.

There’ll be opportunities to experience what sustainable mobility and the future of mobility will look like through the Innovation and Experience Centre that will be developed within Tengah. We’re looking forward to electrical vehicle showcases as well as family-orientated games and activities as a means of letting average folk like you and I learn more about decarbonisation through electrification, safe driving know-how and how to save money through energy efficiency.

2. An EV ‘Discovery’ Centre

It may be a year or so before we can see the Toyota bZ4x ply our roads. But if the preview model is anything to go by, it’s a beautiful car similar in dimensions to the Toyota Harrier. While pricing estimates peg it in the region of $280,000 with taxes in today’s COE climate, we’re comforted to know that it packs in plenty of car with a spacious interior, sizeable boot and tech-laden features to justify the decision. We reckon that the car will be available in a choice of front-wheel drive (201hp with 265Nm of torque and a range of 500km) or higher performance all-wheel drive (215hp with 226Nm or torque and a range of 460km) versions.
