2019 Volkswagen Touareg Launched In A Giant Living Room

16 May 2019, Singapore - Volkswagen ups the SUV game with the all-new full-sized Touareg. Of late, the makers of the iconic Golf have been upping the luxury game. We have seen the Tiguan increase in size, with an improvement in overall quality and refinement. The larger, all-new third generation Touareg is not only the brand’s flagship, but also Volkswagen’s most technologically advanced vehicle. The new car sees a slight increase in length, at 4,878mm, though it sits lower than the previous car at 1,717mm. Luggage capacity has seen an increase, from 580 litres, to a very impressive 810 litres. Even with the additional size, the new Touareg is 106kg lighter, all thanks to the clever use of aluminium in selected areas in the car’s production. Bold exterior design elements, especially in its stretched grille and LED tail lamps adds to character, while its bulged wheel arches at the rear adds greater dimension to the Touareg’s side profile.

Innovative IQ.Light LED matrix headlamps feature independently-lit LEDs, which light up independent of the steering angle, and based on front camera images, to illuminate the course of the bend before the driver makes a turn. Each headlight consists of an array of 128 LEDs. On the Touareg R-Line, Dynamic Light Assist with advanced light-beam control is available to provide exceptional illumination without dazzling other road users.

The new car’s interior is very high in quality, with glass-covered surfaces, and a cockpit with a massive 15” Discover Premium touch screen, tilted to face the driver. A total of seven driver profiles can be saved in the Touareg. Settings include climate control, seat height, driving profile. Even ambient lighting can be customised. R-Line trim buyers will also benefit from driver and front passenger massage seats.

Power is supplied by a 3.0 turbocharged V6 engine, delivering a 340ps and 450Nm of torque. 0-100km/h benchmark timing is at an impressive 5.9 seconds. The Touareg’s 4MOTION permanent all-wheel drive system is fed by an 8-speed tiptronic automatic transmission. In ensuring that the Touareg is off-road capable, the all-wheel drive system features a centre differential lock with asymmetric dynamic torque distribution, which acts as a transfer box for the flow of forces between the front and rear axles. A maximum of 70 per cent of the drive force reaches the front axle, and up to 80 per cent to the rear axle.

Further adding to comfort, the Touareg R-Line features an automatic self-levelling; height adjustable air suspension. The system lowers the car by 15 to 25mm at speeds above 120km/h. In capitalising on the air-suspension, the Touareg R-Line can also be lowered by 40mm for easier loading and unloading.

The Touareg R-Line is also Volkswagen’s very first vehicle to feature four-wheel steering. At speeds below 37km/h the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels for easier maneuvering in tight spaces, benefitting from a reduced turn circle from 12.19m to 11.19m. At speeds above 37km/h, the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the front wheels, delivering lane-changing stability and comfort similar to cars with a longer wheelbase.

Fitted as standard on all Touareg models is the Front Assist system with the City Emergency Brake function. Front Assist uses a radar sensor sited behind the Volkswagen badge on the front grille. The sensor continually monitors the distance to vehicles ahead at speeds up to 250km/h. In critical situations, the system aids the driver by preconditioning the brake system and alerting the driver through visual and audible warnings, and in a second stage by a brief warning jolt. If necessary, the City Emergency Brake function will brake the car completely to a halt.

Other features like Lane Assist and Side Assist are also standard on all Touareg models. Utilising cameras to monitor lane markings to ensure that the large SUV stays in its lane. The system also gently corrects the steering to ensure the Touareg does not veer out. Side Assist with Traffic Alert, utilises sensors on the side of the Touareg to monitor traffic behind the car. The driver is alerted if there is a vehicle in the way, via a visual signal in the corresponding exterior mirror.

On the Touareg R-Line model, the Traffic Jam Assist system, which utilises Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Assist allows the SUV to follow traffic ahead in its lane, and is able to stop and start on its own.

The Touareg is now available in three trim lines.

- $289,900 - furnished with an exquisite “Open-pore Fine Ash Grain” wood decorative panels.
- $289,900 - designed with 45obrushed aluminium decorative inserts.
- $321,900 - featuring distinctive “R” style design. The range-topping Touareg also features four-wheel steering, air suspension, as-well-as Traffic Jam Assist with co-pilot for heavy traffic situations. Volkswagen’s premium Dynaudio ‘Consequence’ sound system is also included.
