2019 Mazda3 Brings Mild-Hybridisation To The Masses

Mazda brings the Astina nameplate back to the successor of the Mazda 323 years on. This time, the Japanese carmaker reserves the badging as a higher-spec trim level (previously, the Astina namesake was reserved for their stylish coupe-like hatchback version of their 323). Singapore is the first country in the world to receive Mazda’s latest SKYACTIV-G 1.5 litre engine, paired with their M-Hybrid system. The new mild-hybrid system represents a breakthrough for the brand, and delivers assistance during acceleration from a standstill, and recovers energy during deceleration. The system also helps to power onboard electrical equipment, when the engine is shut-off.  The M-Hybrid system complements the petrol engine by turning 6.8ps and 100Nm, while the SkyActiv-G 1.5 engine puts out 120ps and 146Nm both at 6,000rpm.

Energy recovery is done during the car’s deceleration, by way of an integrated starter generator (ISG) to convert it into electric power, and stores that power in a lithium-ion battery. The system in-turn utilises a DC-DC converter to step the correct voltage to the car’s different electrical equipment.

Bucking the trend of going 48V, Mazda instead opted for a 20V system, which according to them is sufficient for the car’s application, and for production cost savings; great especially since the Mazda3 is within a price-sensitive segment.

Mazda’s signature Skyactiv-Vehicle architecture which also makes its way into the new 3, is a set of structural technologies which enhances driving attributes, such as accelerating, turning and braking; allowing these processes to feel natural, in-turn which provides added comfort to occupants.

Interior fit and finish has taken another step up in quality, and improved insulation also means a greater reduction in noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels.

Mr Kota Beppu, Program Manager of the All-New Mazda3, says: “The All-New Mazda3 embodies two characters with widespread appeal. The first is the free spirit, determined to follow their own convictions and not be bound by conventional wisdom. This character is represented in the hatchback. To achieve such a look, we took an unprecedented approach to design that eliminates all character lines and relies entirely on lustrous and beautifully curved body panels that reflect the surrounding environment.”

“The other character is that of a lady or gentlemen who combines dignity with a strong individualistic streak. Their adherence to formality and traditional styles conceals an idiomatic beauty that is breathtaking when glimpsed. This character is embodied in the sedan. Aspiring to create the most gorgeous sedan in its class, we set aside the notion of a C-segment car, removed all constraints and extended the overall length. We overcame numerous technical challenges in order to keep the hood and trunk low,” Mr Beppu adds.

There are three trim options to choose from for the Sedan model, Classic, Elegance and Astina, and Elegance or Astina for the Hatchback.

The range-topping Astina models are fitted with premium touches such as signature illumination at the front and rear combination lamps; a piano black pillar-garnish colour; a leather steering wheel and shift knob, and the Bose® sound system with 12 speakers. It also has an advanced i-ACTIVSENSE safety system which comprises Adaptive LED Headlights (ALH); Driver Monitoring System (DMS); Smart Brake Support (SBS) system; Front Cross Traffic Alert (FCTA); Cruising and Traffic Support (CTS), and Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS).

The new Mazda3 is available from $92,688* for the Sedan Classic, to $111,688* for the Hatchback Astina.
