Some car owners are concerned about what modifications if any they should perform on their car before having the ECU tuned. While a tuned ECU will adjust itself to the new parameters of subsequently installed performance parts just like a stock ECU, there are some modifications that should be performed before tuning the ECU. Adding a turbocharger should always be done before tuning the car’s ECU. Major engine work like upgrading valves, camshafts, pulleys or major drivetrain components should also be performed before tuning the ECU. These modifications greatly alter the data read by the car’s various sensors, requiring an altered ECU map for optimal performance.
