As mentioned before, calipers on disc brake systems contain at least one piston, which is sometimes called a “pot.” High-performance cars and aftermarket brake calipers often come with at least two pots or pistons, which essentially double the force of the caliper pressing the brake pads against the disc, stopping the car sooner.

Some high performance aftermarket calipers can contain six or more pots each, providing superior stopping power. These high-performance calipers also don’t float over the discs but instead are in a fixed position, meaning only the pistons or pots move to push the brake pads against the disc.

Many aftermarket brake discs are either slotted, cross drilled or both. Slotted brake discs have curving grooves cut into the discs’ surface, which allows even more heat to escape both during and after braking. Cross drilled discs have actual holes through the discs, which also allow heat the escape.
