Get by with the bare minimum. Because lazy lah!

As most of us would be better off refraining from going out during the COVID-19 outbreak, this would mean that our cars are not heavily utilised.

We are fortunate to have instead of a lockdown, a milder version of it, called a “Circuit Breaker” or perhaps a very dark shade of DORSCON Orange. We hope that everyone reading is doing well. I gather that many of you have either…

1. Learnt a new skill, or improved on an existing one.
2. Gotten fitter
3. Or gotten fatter
4. Or are discreetly pulling your hairs from staying at home this long.

If you have attained or experienced one or more of the above, good for you! The Circuit Breaker is working well… I guess!

Today, we share a few quick basics on keeping your car in proper working order during this period.

Most of us would not be routinely using our vehicles over this period, and a neglected car can potentially spell trouble for you.

Here are a few easy steps with minimal effort on your part, to keep your car in good shape.

1. Drive

Take advantage of the “Circuit Breaker”, since we can still move around to get our essentials, use the time to get the car running. Take a longer route to your destination, so that your engine gets up to proper operating temperature. We estimate that you’d likely run out of food in a week, and this would be ideal. If you are holed up even longer, take some time to start your engine, to get the moving parts in your engine running for a few minutes, and your battery charged up.

2. Go Easy On Your Car… It Too Has Feelings

Give your car time to have its engine lubricate properly. Everything is cold, and you do not want to cause any damage, especially to surfaces which require lubrication.

3. Fill Up Those Tyres

Leaving your car in one place for too long will result in flat spots. Since you will be driving out for supplies within a week, there is no real need to increase the pressure past the correct amount. Just fill them to the correct pressure.

4. Top Up Your Tank

This applies especially to older cars with metal fuel tanks. Without a coat of fuel, the exposed dry walls of the tank may be susceptible to corrosion.

5. Clean Your Car

Just a basic cleaning and remember to wear your mask if not gahman catch. Just a few quick wipes to take off any traces of bird droppings which can cause paint damage. Vacuum your interior if you can, just a few good sweeps over the carpet and other places which might collect dirt. Do remember to discard any used tissues too.

6. Park In A Shaded Area

Do this if you are able to. Your car stays cleaner and cooler.

7. Replenish

It always pays to have extras. Facemasks, tissues, disinfecting wet wipes or hand sanitisers. These will come in handy, especially when you have gone out to buy supplies.

Stay safe everyone!
