The legendary Toyota Supra is back after 17 years. This time round with co-development from BMW.
The legendary Toyota Supra is back after 17 years. This time round with co-development from BMW.
Just like its predecessors, the new Supra comes with a traditional FR setup, and is available with two power options. The go-to engine is the 3.0 straight-six, which features a twin-scroll turbocharger, good for 335bhp and 500Nm, and a 100km/h sprint time of 4.3 seconds. The easier-on-pocket-spec Supra gets a 2.0 straight-four, good for 255bhp and 400Nm, and does 100km/h in 5.2 seconds.
Under the bodywork, the new Supra’s handling is sorted out by a MacPherson Strut front and Multi-link rear setup, while an active differential optimises traction to the driving wheels, allowing up to full lock between left and right driving wheels. A combination of perfect 50:50 weight distribution, optimal engine placement, and condensed bodywork are designed to aid in suppressing the generation of lift.
Accomodation-wise, the new Supra loses its token +2 seats at the rear, but we believe that most buyers will not be missing them. Inspiration is after-all taken from single-seat racing cars. The Supra is designed to place the driver in the center of all the action. Adjustable side bolsters are further complemented by knee pads, providing support during hard cornering.
With current-day expectations, Toyota has not forgotten about driver-aids and safety tech. The Supra is equipped with a pre-crash safety system, which includes a millimetre wave radar + monocular camera, which is able to detect vehicles and pedestrians, helping to prevent accidents; Dynamic Cruise Control and Automated high beams.
The Toyota Supra is available now from local distributor, Borneo Motors, with prices starting from $205,000, excluding COE.
