It’s been an eventful year for the motoring scene in Singapore. COE prices have continued to stay very high, but the government has hinted at injecting more COE supply - 20,000 in fact - in the next few years.

They even said that from February 2025, the vehicle population will be allowed to increase by up to 2%, a stark change in the narrative from the 0% growth target since 2018. Could this be the benefit of ERP 2.0?

Ah yes, how could we forget this major change? ERP 2.0 heralded a permanent change in the cabins of all Singapore cars with the inclusion of a touchscreen instead of an IU. Thankfully, the touchscreen is optional. With ERP 2.0 comes the possibility of distance-based charging, which might allow more cars that are used less.

All this points towards lower COE prices in the coming years. Already, we are seeing more hybrid and electric cars sold than the same period last year, while the population of petrol cars actually declined. We expect this trend to persist, especially with the proliferation of Chinese EV brands that have come to the market, or will come.
