Humble Production ŠKODA Kodiaq Clocks 10,000Km Of Rough Terrain Through Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Now that I got your attention, that really is a true story. The ŠKODA Kodiaq was chosen as a support car for the Czech Republic’s BARTH Racing team, for the Dakar Rally, which spans across the challenging terrains of Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina. The move of the Dakar Rally from Africa to its new home in South America does not make the terrain any easier. While specially built vehicles are the spotlight in these races, who’s main goal is to complete, or even win a race; support vehicles on the other hand, have an arduous backend role away from the limelight.

The standard-spec Kodiaq driven in support of the BARTH Racing team, has to endure altitudes of more than 4,500 meters above sea level (where oxygen thins out), also has to tackle sand, dunes, a salt flat, mud, and dusty roads; a good test of its 4 x 4 capabilities, while its quick-shifting dual-clutch transmission ensures that power-loss between gears is something not heard of. Definitely no humble feat indeed!

Tall order... Czech TV presenter Vlasta Korec had his work cut out for him

Czech television and radio presenter Vlasta Korec, who is more accustomed to driving ŠKODA’s flagship sedan, the Superb Laurin & Klement back home, provided press coverage for the team. He was also given driver responsibilities, piloting the Kodiaq support car. In listing the car’s advantages, Korek mentioned that “The car is sufficiently comfortable even for seven people. And the adaptive cruise control also proved itself to me; it definitely makes driving more comfortable and pleasant”.

Adding to race support duties, the Kodiaq had to shuttle between the hotel and where camp was set up. Its ability of being able to carry up to seven passengers, is only second to its versatility. The abundance of cubby holes, and extra large compartments, ensures that smaller-sized equipment is separated from large items, making access to them easier.

The Kodiaq is able to carry up to 2,005 litres of cargo with the middle and rear seats folded down. Supplies for the race in two Dakar crates, camera gear and even clothes, tents and sleeping bags have to be on-board, as the support team makes its way to the next destination.

Always There For Those Who Ride

ŠKODA is more than just cars which are smart, but a brand with a passion for cycling. Events like the Tour de France and Garmin Titan Race have been routinely supported by the Czech manufacturer.

On this note, ŠKODA will also be lending their name and support to the Charity Bike ‘n’ Blade 2019 event for the second year running. Six support cars, made up of the Kodiaq and Karoq will be providing assistance.

Participants will cycle up Cameron Highlands; a journey totalling 65km, with an elevation of 1,400 meters, and you can be sure that a ŠKODA support vehicle will be within arm’s reach. Riders will then proceed with another 163km around Ipoh. All this to raise funds for Peacehaven Nursing home.
