The Princes Highway is an ‘A’ road, which means it isn’t quite like expressways in Singapore. On most parts of the highway, it is a dual-lane single carriageway with each lane going in opposite directions. While the drive back is not as scenic as the Great Ocean Road, the views of the agricultural farms you get on the highway, and the various small towns it brings you through are rather interesting in their own right. The drive back to Melbourne will take about 4 and a half hours with one lunch stop included – so plan your departure times well if you are driving straight back to Melbourne International Airport to return your car.

Tip:

One alternative would be to skip Warrnambool. Time your drive to catch The Twelve Apostles at sunset and then stay for a night at the nearby Port Campbell. You can visit The Twelve Apostles again in the morning and return inland via Princetown Road- Colac Road to connect to the Princes Highway.

If you have more time, Sovereign Hill at Ballarat would be an option to explore if you have an additional half day or so before heading back to Melbourne. It is like a themed town restored to Victoria's goldrush days. You can pan for gold, visit a gold mine and enjoy some pies while you ride in a carriage.
