Market Watch: What Popular Used Cars Are You Searching On Carousell?
Will the pendulum swing towards aspirational cars, or those that we will actually buy?
The act of used car classifieds hunting can deduct precious hours from your daily routine - just ask our editorial team and we’d surrender. Well, an unhealthy obsession it might be - but who wouldn’t want to find treasure troves and bargain basement deals?
Our previous most popular used cars feature narrowed down on cars with enthusiast credentials. A quick scroll now figured that this trend hasn’t fully subsided, with compact hatchbacks like the 2012 R56 MINI Cooper S and a 2005 Suzuki Swift Sport striking your fancy. What other cars made it to the Popular List?
2019 SEAT Ibiza 1.0 DSG
An approachable annual depreciation and compact proportions are likely reasons why the SEAT Ibiza made it to the list. It sits on the same MQB platform as the VW Polo and Audi A1, powered by a perky turbo 3-cylinder pushing more than 110bhp.
200Nm to shift 1,164kg worth of Ibiza brings us back to the good old ways, where ample power and a manageable kerbweight gave it natural, delightful driving dynamics.
2009 Toyota Estima 7-seater
The noughties produced supercars fit for a billionaire’s man cave (namely Lamborghini Murcielago and Bugatti Veyron, just to scrape the icing on the cake), but it also saw the continuation of sensible, practical haulers like this Toyota Estima.
Measuring in at just under 4.8 metres in length (a BMW 7 Series is now almost 5.4 metres long) and weighing even lighter than a RWD Tesla Model 3 (1,740kg vs 1765kg), it's a proven recipe that can be yours for S$1,000 depreciation per month.
2023 BYD Atto 3
Price wars - one of the more prominent “noises” generated in the EV sphere that can’t be ignored. But at the end of the day, it boils down to what you want out of a car. Will an EV suit your lifestyle?
Low mileage EVs are popping up on classifieds, and due to our COE structure, their list prices don’t nosedive like what we see in neighbouring markets. This Atto 3 has covered 10,000km in a year - one of at least 14 more in the used car market.
2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG
Modified cars will only garner the attention of a handful, but you’re certainly not letting this Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG off the hook. Clad in premium upgrades like a big brake kit and sporty Michelins, ad claims that wear and tear parts have been sorted (with receipts).
Depreciation is tagged at 16 grand annually, which (believe it or not, my foreigner friends!) places it in the more affordable end of the spectrum against this Mitsubishi Evo 9 RS. RIfle bolt shifts are guaranteed from its 7-speed DCT, backed by a monster 355hp 2.0-litre turbo that we’ve learnt to appreciate more in an environment increasingly powered by large battery packs.
