Market Watch: What Cool Cars Can We Buy In Singapore At S$1,000 Depreciation Per Month?
Landing fresh finds in our unique automotive landscape can be a challenge, but less explored variants still exist!
Used car buying in most parts of the world often only relied on factors such as mileage, general vehicle condition and servicing history. But with COE thrown into the mix, the pendulum swings towards when these cars were registered, and how much COE was paid. Such is the reality in Singapore that we tend to “simplify” the math and keep a keen eye on each car’s annual depreciation.
On one end of the spectrum you’ll find depreciation levels that only UHNWI can sustain, but there’s joy to be had at the more relatable end of the scale. And they look pretty cool too. Some have aged nicely over time, while others swam against the tide to deliver nostalgia by the bucketloads. All these for S$1,000 depreciation per month doesn’t sound too bad, eh?
1998 MG F 1.8l Manual
Depreciation: S$990 per month
It seemed like a distant memory when MG cars were associated with the Rover Group. The MG F’s British influence was authentic, given that it was designed by British Aerospace just before BMW bought Rover Group. It sneaks in between the iconic MGB and futuristic Cyberster in MG’s roadster lineup. Drenched in British Racing Green, this unit very well reflects MG’s pride of the 90s.
2008 Honda Crossroad 1.8 L HID Edition (A)
Depreciation: S$990 per month
Honda indulged in a niche in the late noughties, and perhaps unknowingly created a segment that dominated the market till today. The Honda Crossroad we reckon was the OG crossover, a concept not familiar back in the day, but proved to be a game changer. This 3-row, 7-seater appealed to young couples with small children. Well, look at the roads today - every single demographic can’t seem to live without crossovers!
2008 Jaguar XF 3.0 V6 Supercharged Premium Luxury (A)
Depreciation: S$970 per month
We hear you - this has “ticking time bomb” written all over it, with 6 owners and a depreciation too good to be true. But if you can strike a deal to have this Jaguar XF inspected first, this can be a rather spectacular bargain basement deal. We’ve dived into the topic of supercharged cars - here’s one at a price that doesn’t break the bank.
2010 BMW 3 Series Convertible E93 320i Auto
Depreciation: S$970 per month
We still see a couple of E90 (sedan) and E92 (coupe) roaming Singapore roads. How about the E93 convertible? These are few and far between. The 320i convertible used a retractable hardtop - we could still recall back in the day how these folded like magic. Sure, the added weight hampered a chassis regarded till this day as one of the most sorted in the business. But that does not hinder the appeal of driving one top down in 2024.
