Market Watch: Buy These Diesel Cars In Singapore Before It’s Too Late
We won’t be able to buy new diesel cars from 2025 onwards, but there are still some heavy hitters lying in the classifieds…
The writing was already on the wall when authorities announced that all vehicles in Singapore will have to run on cleaner energy by 2040. More recently, diesel cars can no longer be registered from 2025 onwards, which comes as little surprise given that our perception of diesels have not been entirely positive.
Less than 3 percent of passenger cars run on diesel in Singapore. With higher diesel road tax on the cards for those that still want to buy a new diesel car before this ruling kicks in, this figure will only dip further.
The used car market for diesel passenger cars could also feel the ripple effect. Could there be “fire sale” exercises to get rid of them before demand wanes? Perhaps those that like to indulge in a niche (performance diesels!) might drive prices up? Whatever the case, the fact remains that the diesel cars in your shortlist will not hang around for much longer - here are some cool finds to whet your appetite!
2013 Porsche Panamera Diesel 3.0
The Panamera Diesel was launched two years after the Panamera’s debut in 2009. While that would seem incomprehensible in today’s electrified world, it also inferred how important diesels were to Porsche’s luxo-barge fleet only slightly more than a decade ago.
Well, this 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel could summon almost 600Nm of torque, more than the Panamera GTS and only a sliver less than the S Hybrid. We could argue that this was peak diesel performance tech. Diesel in a sedan form factor - consider this a rare breed indeed.
2015 Land Rover Defender 90 Diesel 2.4
“90” in the Land Rover Defender represented its wheelbase (93 inches), which makes this an excellent compact offroader. Powered by a 2.2-litre Ford Duratorq turbodiesel, this model included a diesel particulate filter (DPF) - a first for the Defender.
Granted, it’s not featherweight by any means, weighing in at well over 2 tonnes (comparable to a BMW i7 xDrive60). But it has the ability to navigate the choppy waters of literally anywhere…
2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class G400d
It’s tough to imagine a G not blinged out with a full AMG kit, propelled by a petrol biturbo V8. But for one initially created to aid in farming and military efforts, diesels were a brilliant, no nonsense option.
326hp and 700Nm from a 3.0-litre inline 6 cylinder are massive numbers for the G400d. But what’s key is that peak torque arrives at only 1,200rpm, so you won’t be left wanting for more oomph in real world conditions.
As with most Gs, they are spec-dependent. This is wrapped in tan leather, showered in white metallic. We can already sense a few suitors waiting in line…
