Market Watch: Best Used Cars For Elderlies

Enjoy your golden years with these sensible pre-owned haulers!

We’ve kept harping on driving cars that look and feel timeless, but this doesn’t apply to the human body, unfortunately. Car designs can grow on us over time, which leaves us behind the wheel functioning in contrasting fashion - a ticking time bomb.

But instead of counting down the years, why not approach this concept of driving with renewed optimism, with cars that are reasonably priced (in Singapore’s context!), and easy to drive? Driving experiences can age like fine wine too…

2018 Honda Jazz 1.3

Familiarity is key when we approach our golden years, which is why the Honda Jazz ranks right on top. Despite its compact proportions, it has plenty of cabin space, and a neat trick - the base of rear seats fold up so that you can transport items like flower pots vertically. The Honda Jazz knows how to appeal to new drivers, but it doesn’t neglect those in their golden years.

2019 Honda HR-V 1.5

The HR-V needs no introduction especially in Singapore. Sure, it’s the less fancied option due to the sheer number of PHV usage. But we can’t deny its breadth of abilities - it’s spacious, handles decently, reliable and not expensive to maintain. Think of it as a Jazz “Plus” (based on the same platform, too).

2018 Volkswagen Golf 1.0 TSI DSG

We’ve laid down the agenda for cars that need to be easy to drive - the VW Golf must be mentioned, too. The local market might have seen an influx of Golfs in the late noughties, primarily due to lower COE premiums for the Mk 5 and 6 variant. But the base Mk 7 Golf felt like it was cut from the same cloth, while adding more layers of refinement.

2008 Toyota Camry

We’re bucking the compact car trend for a moment, only to suggest one that’s tough to argue against from a familiarity standpoint. Heard of Camry owners that refuse to “upgrade” to German cars even if they have the dough? We get it - it’s like patronising your favourite char kuay teow stall for 20 years. Try to persuade a loyal Toyota customer to drive another marque - we’ll be waiting!

2024 BYD Dolphin

It will take more time for more Dolphins to spring up in classifieds, but this is a good start if a senior decides to jump on the EV bandwagon. It’s compact and relatively light for an EV (starts from 1,500kg), so city driving will be a cinch. Many first-time drivers and seniors in Bangkok (where I spend most of my time) are already driving compact EVs like the ORA Good Cat, Dolphin, and Neta V - we can understand why! We just need depreciation to dip just a tad more…
