Hyundai Ioniq 5 AWD Inspiration 77 kWh First Drive: The Range Topper Is The One To Get

Hyundai Ioniq 5 AWD Inspiration 77 kWh First Drive: The Range Topper Is The One To Get

The Inspiration variant is more sure-footed and comes with better steering feel, with little penalty to comfort.

Sitting on the Zero Gravity seats on the expressway while Hyundai’s Nature Sounds were playing in the background was pure luxury.

Very often, I find myself preferring the lower powered, rear wheel drive versions of BEVs as opposed to high-po dual motor variants of the same model. They are typically sweeter to drive and more authentic behind the wheel.

It’s not the case with the Ioniq 5 though. In Inspiration trim that comes with a dual motor setup good for 352 hp and 605 Nm, it is the best version of the Ioniq 5 I have tried so far.

The Ioniq 5 Inspiration 77 kWh is the best variant, how so?
The light and slightly vague steering of the Prestige RWD variant is much improved in the Inspiration model, with more heft and dynamism.

OK, and what else?
Comfort does not suffer as well even with 20” rims that are 1” bigger than in Prestige models. In fact, the Ioniq 5 is one of the most comfortable cars I have ever sat in on the North-South Expressway. Even at speeds approaching unprintable numbers, the Ioniq 5 Inspiration is always plush yet never losing its composure. However, for those who drive often across Malaysia, do note that top speed is limited to 185 km/h. If you frequently cruise at faster speeds, you may be left wanting. Hyundai has limited the top speed to allow the best mix of range and battery life preservation.

Is anything enhanced in the interior of the Ioniq 5 Inspiration 77 kWh?
Everything is pretty much similar on the inside of the Ioniq 5 Inspiration versus the Prestige models, which is no bad thing. It is an airy interior that makes full use of the car’s clever packaging. Sitting on the Zero Gravity seats on the expressway while Hyundai’s Nature Sounds were playing in the background was pure luxury. The user interface is also second to none, focusing on logic and ease of use.

How was the Ioniq 5 Inspiration 77 kWh on the North-South Highway?
For driving solely in Singapore, the Cat A Ioniq 5 models are good enough. But it’s above 60 km/h where the Inspiration model really shows the Cat A models a clean set of heels. Slowing down from high speeds was also progressive and well-judged with regeneration set in i-Pedal mode. It was strangely pleasurable to drive on the expressway despite needing to slow down several times for slow moving vehicles overtaking on the right lane, because of the beautifully tuned regen.

Your verdict of the Ioniq 5 Inspiration 77 kWh?
The Ioniq 5 is one of the best cars I have driven this year for its sheer daily drivability and single minded focus on comfort. The Inspiration takes it up a notch.
