First Drive: Porsche Cayenne and Cayenne S (E3.2)
The E3.2 Cayenne facelift brings with it a load of goodies, not least a V8 for the Cayenne S!
At a recent launch event of the E3.2 Cayenne, we got to try the Cayenne and Cayenne S on a short test drive.
What’s new about the new E3.2 Cayenne?
It’s one of the most extensive facelifts Porsche has done, and main mechanical changes include ditching the 2.9 twin-turbo V6 in the old Cayenne S for a 4.0 twin turbo V8. With some sprinkling of Zuffenhausen dust, Porsche has somehow managed to make the V8 cleaner than the smaller V6 it replaces. Its PHEV models now also have a greater EV emissions-free driving range. Instead of the three chamber air suspension of the previous model, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) has been revised to a two chamber, two valve solution for better rebound and compression control.
There are some changes to the interior layout as well, but thankfully, climate controls remain as physical controls on the centre console. It is a little Taycan inspired, with a 12.6-inch curved instrument panel and a control concept dubbed Porsche Driver Experience.
There is a steering wheel derived straight from the 992, and the 12.3-inch Porsche Communication Management (PCM) infotainment system is now streamlined and easier to use. Some classic Cayenne details remain, like the centre grab bars and the vertical aircon vents.
How is the E3.2 Cayenne like to drive?
On the road, the Cayenne’s comfort achieves a new level of refinement. It feels even more daily driving centric than ever before, with loads of low end torque, light steering (one might say almost too light) and damping that smoothes out all but the worst unevenness of the road.
Dubbed as a sports car for five, the Cayenne’s surprisingly good handling for its size is still very much intact. The way it manages impeccable comfort and precise handling is the trademark Porsche rubber stamp on the facelifted model.
A V8 cleaner than a V6, seriously?
But most definitely, the biggest change is the new Cayenne S with a V8. We could all do with more V8s in the world, and so the Cayenne S is cause for celebration. It is emotive and potent, even with exhausts that meet the strict noise regulations of today. Fuel consumption is a moot point for something so expensive like a Cayenne S in Singapore, and so for the areas that count - engagement and aural pleasure - the V8 trumps the old V6 by quite a fair margin.
How much is the E3.2 Porsche Cayenne in Singapore?
The base Cayenne starts at $397,588 without COE, while the V8 Cayenne S starts at $521,088 without COE.
Why is the Cayenne so popular?
We look forward to spending more time with the E3.2 Cayenne for a full review, but for now, I can confirm that the Cayenne secures its position as the SUV with the widest spread of talents between the comfort and sport spectrum.
