Maximum Power Output (MPO) threshold for Category A COE for EVs will rise from 97 kW (130bhp) to 110 kW (147.5bhp) from the next COE quarter in May 2022.

In a period where local automotive industry news was dominated by sky-high COE premiums and a “bonus” tier of Additional Registration Fees (let alone rising fuel prices!), it almost felt too good to be true when the Ministry of Transport (MOT) reconfigured the taxing system to “favour” drivers, even if it benefits only a small but growing segment of cars.

On Tuesday 8 March, MOT announced that more Electric Vehicle (EV) models will qualify for Category A COE, (along with a “promise” of at least three charging points for EVs in each HDB car park by 2025 - a story that we will save for another day). Maximum Power Output (MPO) threshold for Category A COE for EVs will rise from 97 kW (130bhp) to 110 kW (147.5bhp) from the next COE quarter in May 2022.

Based on the current COE tender, Cat A COE (S$63,000) is around S$30k lower than a Cat B and Cat E COE (both currently cost very similar at S$93,590 and S$93,102 respectively), so who are the “lucky” few cars that can take advantage of this announcement come May? Or if you are planning to buy an EV, will they fall under this bracket? If they do, it’ll probably be wise to hold out for two more months!

Hyundai Ioniq Electric 38.3kWh (A)

Power: 100kW

The Ioniq has never been one to steal the show, but it's an inoffensive way into an EV, a bit like a Korean Prius but easier on the eye.

MG ZS Electric 44.5kWh (A)

Power: 105kW

Always a strong contender, the MG ZS plays its cards well.

Hyundai Kona Electric 39.2kWh (A)

Power: 100kW

The Kona ICE is already a decent car, what more as an EV? This should be one more the hotter drives of the Cat A EV scene.

Kia Niro Electric Short Range 39.2 kWh (A)

Power: 100kW

The Niro, closely related to the Kona, is also another hot number, with more conventional looks and a prettier interior.

Nissan Leaf Electric 40 kWh (A)

Power: 110kW

It's no surprise that the ageing Leaf is on this list, it'll be interesting to see if it successor can do the same.

Mazda MX-30 Electric 35.5 kWh Sport Luxury (A) (PI only, for now)

Power: 107kW

Probably the most anticipated EV on the Cat A list, the MX-30 seems to blend style and value very well. We can't wait to drive this.

Almost made it:

MG 5 Electric Exclusive SW 61.1 kWh (A)

Power: 115 kW

The MG5 narrow missed being in Cat A, which is a bummer. Perhaps a slight detune in power wouldn't go amiss for this workhorse to be in Cat A.
