Practically on the heels of the DSG comes a new technology that some are calling “revolutionary.” The Zeroshift gearbox, developed by a UK company of the same name, has implemented a simple yet ingenious replacement for synchromesh in manual gearboxes. Best of all, it is reliable and cheap to produce. In short, it delivers everything that drivers and developers wanted from the DSG that DSG never did. DSG is the Zeroshift's only competition in terms of overall performance but the advantages of the Zeroshift cannot be ignored.

The gear changes on the Zeroshift are completely seamless. Its Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) changes gears at a faster rate than any other gearbox, including the already lightning fast DSG. It literally changed gears in zero time, hence the name. To be fair, it can take up to 2ms, but that speed is as transparent to the driver as it is unusual for this gearbox. Zeroshift also provides smoother acceleration that is a drastic improvement over the DSG. It is more fuel-efficient and has a better initial rating for emissions regardless of what vehicle to which it is applied.

For road vehicles, Zeroshift provides even more refinement by combining its gear-shift actuation with a clutch. The result is a system that outstrips the DSG in both efficiency and cost.

Another impressive attribute of the Zeroshift is that it actually makes the vehicle faster by eliminating the need to ever interrupt torque, even with the gas pedal floored. When running in sixth gear, for example, the DSG will usually elect to downshift into fourth with the pedal floored creating a loss of at least 30ms between shifts on average.
