Could This Be The Best 3 Series For Singapore In A Low COE World?
Given the sort of traffic we face, the 330e makes absolute sense.
If you let me dream a little and rewind back to a time when COE levels were $30-40k, I reckon the 330e has a fighting chance to be the best 3 Series variant for Singapore.
As a track drive at Chang International Circuit can attest to, the 330e M Sport is a remarkably good handler on the race circuit - despite lugging around a PHEV drivetrain that punishes it with a 245 kg weight deficit. It could be because the batteries are tucked underneath the rear seats, thereby helping with weight distribution.
In fact, it’s surprising how close the car handles to its sportier sibling, the M340i. It goes to show how good a base the G20 is, and I like that the 330e retains a traditional and simple RWD layout.
Taking the B48 from the 320i, the 330e also sounds surprisingly sporty, although perhaps not as effervescent as the 330i. But you do get more power (+47 hp) and torque (+20 Nm) than the 330i, and we just can imagine how wonderful the car would be to drive in full electric mode for up to 62 km (WLTP) along the streets of Bangkok or Singapore.
Retaining the beautiful handling of the 3 Series while having the ability to drive emissions free? It’s a bit like having your cake and eating it, too. But of course, the 330e will probably be a little pricier than the 330i, which essentially means it probably won’t sell in Singapore in this climate. A pity for a car that runs the 330i pretty close as one of my favourite 3 Series variants.
