BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe Hits Town

While BMW brands their new compact as a coupe, it does little to disguise the fact that it has sedan rivalling versatility. And we believe that this will sit well with the Singapore market, where sedans are still popular.

Following the launch of the BMW 1 Series, the all-new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is finally unveiled. Like the new 1 Series, the 2 Series Gran Coupe utilises BMW’s UKL architecture, which is a front-wheel drive platform.

While BMW brands their new compact as a coupe, it does little to disguise the fact that it has sedan rivalling versatility. And we believe that this will sit well with the Singapore market, where sedans are still popular.

For now, Singapore will get two 218i variants and their high performance two-litre M235i. At launch, the base BMW 218i Gran Coupe Luxury is priced at $160,888. Adding another $3,000 for the BMW 218i Gran Coupe M Sport, brings you more exterior kitting, a firmer M Sport suspension for improved drive dynamics, an M Sport Steering and M Sport brakes.

Both 218i Gran Coupe models are powered by a 1.5 litre 3-cylinder engine, offering 140 hp, which is adequate, but with a high torque output of 220 Nm from 1,480 rpm to 4,200 rpm. Drive is relayed to the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, and 100km/h in 8.7 seconds.

The range-topping BMW M235i xDrive Gran Coupe benefits from a high-powered 2.0, dishing out 306 hp, and a whopping 450 Nm of torque from 1,750-4,500 rpm; which promises an entertaining experience. The go-faster “Beemer” is fitted with an M Sport steering rack and brakes, and also benefits from an adaptive suspension. Handling is improved with its all-wheel drive drivetrain, which is fed via an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission. The M235i clocks 100km/h in just 4.9 seconds.

The 2 Series Gran Coupe’s shark-like styling is fronted by contoured kidney bars, and signature quad headlights. The M235i is identifiable by a mesh grille with closable vents, to help bring the engine to optimal operating temperature quickly.

Its driver-centric dash features a heavy carry-over of current generation parts and styling cues, which is impressive in quality. The new 2 Series also benefits from BMW’s new BMW Operating System 7.0, which includes advanced voice control features. The system is fronted by two large 10.25-inch screens on the BMW Live Cockpit Professional, standard fittings on both engine options. Buyers can also opt for the available Gesture Control function, which includes two customisable gesture functions. A 9.2-inch Head-Up Display is available as an option as well.

A 2,670mm wheelbase provides enough room for 4 occupants, while 430 litres of cargo space is generous, and is easily expandable via pulling on release flaps in the boot compartment to release the 40:20:40 split rear seatbacks for added convenience. A double boot floor also adds additional stowage room for smaller items.

Competition to the 2 Series Gran Coupe range is directly from Mercedes-Benz with their CLA range.
