Back to Basics with the Suzuki Jimny
We take the car out for a refresher as the four-door model is imminent.
The current Jimny has always captivated me. It’s just so darn cool.
I think the fact that I went to Bali shortly after the test drive made me love it even more. It’s the sort of car that’s perfect for a volcanic island with endless sandy beaches and magnificent mountains. The Jimny can literally go anywhere and everywhere, perfect for an explorer of the great natural wilderness.
But what about in Singapore? Truth be told, if you use the Jimny solely as a road car and it is your primary means of transport every day to and from work, there are probably better cars out there for this purpose. Its drivetrain is tough as nails but rudimentary. With hardcore off-road equipment, the car’s never going to be a fuel economy champion. Its ride is also what I would describe as basic. The interior is functional and tough wearing though, and has enough toys to keep one happy.
But if you love the outdoors and would use the Jimny as a lifestyle car - think weekend trips out to the rainforest in Malaysia, for example - there’s precious little out there for the money that has more appeal than the Jimny. Despite its foibles, I truly adore it. It feels like whole worlds have opened up with the go-anywhere capabilities of the Jimny. As it turns out, the basics are all we really need in life, especially when it involves traversing all sorts of terrain.
There’s a four-door version coming, which is more interesting for me given I have a son and the accompanying barang-barang. I’m really looking forward to trying that out!
