A Petrolhead’s EV Adventure with the Hyundai IONIQ 6
We took the slinky IONIQ 6 on a cruise to Kuala Lumpur for a lifestyle getaway.
In Singapore, the IONIQ 6s impressed with their everyday usability in an urban setting. How are they like on a long distance drive?
I’ve been on several road trips across Malaysia, including with electric vehicles, and this one with Hyundai and the IONIQ 6 was another great opportunity to see how EVs perform over a longer stretch.
I’m keen to see how Hyundai’s latest EVs enhance the driving experience for enthusiasts, proving their mettle through comfort on the highway and their agility on B-roads.
Additionally, Hyundai had something special in store for us for this road trip, encompassing not just a drive but also including lifestyle elements.
Day 1 - Singapore to Kuala Lumpur
Hyundai invited us on a three-day road trip with the IONIQ 6 models from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur. We started our day early at Komoco Motors and made our way towards Malaysia via Tuas Checkpoint. Gelang Patah is a familiar stop for many Singaporeans before hitting the North-South Highway. After snapping some photos and catching up with fellow journalists, we continued our journey.
As an owner of multiple manual performance cars, driving the IONIQ 6 was a refreshing change of pace, the drive was much quieter and smoother than I’m used to, making the journey more relaxing. A 20-minute charge stop gave us time to stretch—and we even made a furry friend.
After a delicious lunch, we headed to our final activity of the day in Kuala Lumpur.
We were introduced to Malaysia's modern take on traditional rug-making at Yoo Art Life. A quick, informative briefing explained how the machines worked and the various techniques for sewing yarn. I picked out a few of my favorite colors and began designing my own rug. Each of us was given a blank canvas with the outline of the Ioniq 6, allowing us to create a unique piece.
By the evening, we arrived at our hotel, settled in, and prepared for an early start the next day.
Day 2 – The Drive
On day two, we hit scenic roads outside Kuala Lumpur, where the IONIQ 6 shined. Instant torque made overtaking easy, and the car’s low center of gravity ensured stable cornering. As someone used to manual cars, I was surprised at how fun and agile this quiet EV was, handling the backroads effortlessly.
After a quick drive, we arrived at our lunch spot, where we enjoyed wholesome farm-to-table dishes.
We then relaxed with a sound bath session at the W Hotel. Refreshed from the workshop, we were treated to an incredible dinner at a stunning restaurant with a breathtaking view.
Day 3 - Singapore to Kuala Lumpur
On the final day, we made our way back to Singapore, reflecting on how the IONIQ 6 delivered both comfort and excitement. These past few days have been some of the most memorable road trips I've ever experienced, and they've opened my eyes to the true joy of driving EVs. A big thanks to Hyundai for the unforgettable journey.
