Fast forward to today, LTA has announced that the next-generation ERP OBUs (On-Board Units) will be installed on existing Singapore-registered vehicles in the second half of 2021. The exercise will take place over a period of 18 months.

While the new OBU is intended for the next-generation (nextgen ERP) that leverages Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), we could not agree with how the new OBU will be installed in our cars.

While motorcycles will have a singular robust unit, owners of other vehicles will have three devices within their vehicles. An Antenna, a Touchscreen Display and a Processing Unit. while both the Antenna and Touchsceen are windscreen-mounted in the same spot where our current IUs are located, most of us I believe can live with that. However, the Processing Unit, which looks like it is for your cashcard, will take up some precious knee space for your front passenger, and it does look mighty fugly if you ask me.

Many cars have a small cubby storage beside the steering wheel. Good for holding your sunglasses, loose change or even a half-eaten 6” Subway sandwich.
If your car has one of those standing infotainment screens, we would hardly look behind them, and since it is wasted space, why not?
It usually is large enough to accommodate a good few things, placing it here will have it out of sight, keeping our dash neat.
See LTA, even a similar-sized packet of Ribena can fit in here.
