Our day started early the next day at 0500hrs with another 569 kilometres back home with the most treacherous portion being the downhill descent through Simpang Pulai. While not as dangerous as the Tapah route, trucks do routinely traverse the SP route delivering supplies to the towns in the area.

With the street lights limited to within the town area that SP cuts through, the steep downhills require utmost attention to negotiate safely especially in the dark. Our video below of the descent gives you an idea of the road condition in the dark.

Conclusion

In the end, we covered 1,660 kilometres over two days in the Golf R and were thoroughly impressed. Not just with the landscapes we came across but in the ease in which the German hatch completed the journey.

Despite being the flagship performance hatch in the VW line-up, it has lost none of the practicality of the base Golf platform. The trip was also proof of its versatility in alternating between a comfortable tourer and a nippy hatch on the mountain roads.

If you’re lucky enough to own this multi-talented machine, be sure to do it justice and take it on an epic road trip of your own, it’ll be one to remember!
