X-ssing paths

If the X3 wasn’t dynamic enough for you, BMW has the solution! Prettier or not, the jury’s still out but for sure the new X4 has something to shout about…

What we like:
pros
Definitely a much better handling machine over the X3.
What we dislike:
cons
Debatable design that have us sitting on the fence. Sacrifices some practicality for a sexier roofline.

Under the hood, is the N55 that churns 306bhp and a whopping 400Nm of torque from just 1,200rpm. Although it shares the same engine as in the larger X6, the X4 benefits greatly from the 250kg weight difference. And as a result, the smaller SAV demolishes the century sprint in just 5.5 seconds.

While the car is impressive in a straight line, the lower suspension means the X4 handles even better than the X3. There’s a lot less lean when throwing it into a bend and with the pin sharp steering, finding the apex seems easier than before.

But the versatility of the Dynamic Drive Control rocker switch means the X4 is just as versatile as the other BMW models we tested. Despite the shorter suspension travel, in Comfort mode the baby SAV maintains the calm controlled ride you get in the X3 without any compromises.

Even when cruising on the highway, the BMW maintains a serene ride and atmosphere with excellent insulation against road and wind noise.

Conclusion

Although one can call BMW lazy, it becomes difficult to blame them because the X4 brings the ‘Ultimate Driving Machine’ moniker to a higher regard than its less attractive brethren. But is that dynamic ability worth the sacrifices in practicality and the $14,000 premium? We say yes, very much yes. For all the fun the X4 brings over its X3 sibling, yes! Yes! Yes!
