Urban Pacer
The much hyped about Ingenium 2.0 engine finds its way into Jaguar’s first SUV. The F-Pace which made its appearance back in 2016 was deemed to be a car more heavily sought after than Jaguar’s traditional stable of sedans and sports cars. Unfortunately the 3.0 might have been too large a pill for the Singapore market to swallow. The new 2.0 on the other hand seems to be the sensible package the brand needs, or more accurately, the market needs.
Cabin build is spot-on, though I would not be agreeable with the placement of the power window switches on the sill of the front windows. Tropical weather is not its best friend. Other than that, displays within the instrument binnacle are clear, and the infotainment unit with SatNav is intuitive, with physical menu buttons flanking the screen for easy switching.
The Jag quite easily provides accommodation for five adults, with supportive front seats, ideal for long journeys.
Adding to its practicality, the 650 litre boot with 40:20:40 folding rear seats allows you to throw in most anything, from golf clubs to your pet goat.
The larger than life front grille with those squinty headlamps, presents an imposing presence to anyone’s rear-view mirror. The F-Pace can deliver on style and performs pretty well.
But in a time where the market is saturated with Compact Premium SUVs, aggressive styling and the idea of space for all only checks some of the boxes set on a slippery slope of needs and wants.
With options available, like the Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW’s new X3, Audi’s Q5 and Volvo’s XC60, Jaguar’s entry is up for a tough fight.
