The Sublime Drive of a Topless Ride

The Sublime Drive of a Topless Ride

An open top with an engine behind you is just one of the best ways to experience a supercar. It is very fitting, that we have our hands on the R8 again, in delivering our last car review of 2017! We began the year with the R8 Coupe, and we loved how the second generation R8 did the job of waking up the senses, and how superb its handling, and refinement was.

The “Drive Mode” selector sited on the steering also allows for the car to be driven more economically, the R8 is able to coast, helping to save on a few precious drops of fuel. The R8 does this by disengaging both clutches when you lift off the accelerator paddle. Essentially, similar to dropping the car into Neutral, and gliding. Additionally, the Cylinder on Demand (COD) system cancels off one bank of cylinders under lighter loads, and in the four upper gears, but with a twist. Audi did also mention that the system also does sequential switching of banks to prevent cooling of the catalytic converter, and ensuring engine longevity.

There is a boot a tiny one up in-front… if you do need the added space, just more than enough for a duffel bag. As it sits just ahead of the electronic Haldex mechanicals, there is a substantial amount of heat build-up. Good for pot lucks, bad for ice cream.

Our Thoughts

It is a supercar which is easy to own as an everyday driver, with enough ride height too, to tackle most local carparks with ease. Sure, with a 10 cylinder NA, fuel economy is not even close to being one of its strong points, but we must lay the question down. How many more times, will we be able see a non-force fed large engine in a car thundering down our streets?

To see and appreciate one is definitely something fantastic. But to drive and experience one is simply divine!

Have a Happy New Year friends!
