The Executive Race

Maserati’s Ghibli brings the joys of Quattroporte style driving, into a slightly smaller package. Perhaps all the more better for our kind of tighter city conditions.

The twin-turbocharged V6 3.0, delivers is pretty addictive 350hp, while the higher-powered version with the Sport Pack takes this to 410hp. Pop the exhaust flaps open, and the Ghibli responds with a hair-standing burble.

The gear selector could be better, while popping it into “Drive” is quite easy, it can actually be difficult to find “Reverse”.

While most of the good stuff happens with a heavy foot, the Ghibli is actually easy to drive in city traffic, and definitely a hoot to drive with the engine stretched. The suspension is well sorted, and Maserati had left just a little bit of slip in the handling, making the drive pretty entertaining. Weight distribution is stated at 50:50, and it does feel so alive. There is quite minimal outside noise intrusion into the cabin, and we do love how well the seats hold you in. On the flip side, we would have loved it if the steering was just a tad smaller, and that the shift paddles a little more discreet.

The BMW 540i M Sport is more refined, better built, and is actually a little quicker to the 100km/h mark, and delivers more in-terms of tech and value. The Ghibli is for those who want a little more soul in the drive, and are not so interested in technological goodies.
