Subaru Impreza WRX STI 2.5 A-Line 5Dr Review: Automatic Choice

Subaru Impreza WRX STI 2.5 A-Line 5Dr Review: Automatic Choice

An automatic gearbox for the hardcore Impreza WRX STI doesn’t make much sense at first. Let’s see if our minds change after a drive in it.

Purists and driving enthusiasts should just do their own gear shifting and stick to the manual
What we like:
pros
Smooth boxer engine
pros
explosive performance once it gets moving
pros
aggressive looks
pros
nbang-for-your-buck
pros
aggressive gearbox mapping
What we dislike:
cons
Engine doesn’t have as much torque as the manual model
cons
plasticky interior
cons
high fuel consumption
cons
five speeds only

The A-Line misses out on the manual version’s DCCD, Brembo brakes and steering wheel controls for the stereo but hits back with cruise control, keyless operation and access, 18-inch alloys, half leather trim, electrically adjustable driver’s seat and so on.

The STI A-Line represents good value for money considering the performance and dynamic handling it can give you. At $118,500, the automatic STI is just two grand more than the manual version.

The A-Line will win fans for those who hate to work out their left leg or whose missus wants the convenience of a two pedal model or even for those Class 3A license holders but purists and driving enthusiasts should just do their own gear shifting and stick to the manual

You’ll be disappointed if you consider the Impreza WRX STI A-Line as an all out tarmac scorcher. See it as a fast and practical family car and it’ll be hard not to be impressed by it.
