Sleeper Quattro Number 5

Sleeper Quattro Number 5

How about a sleeper version of the Audi Q5? It is quite a bit quicker, looks a little hotter, and still slips right under the radar gun (if you are wise enough). So Mercedes-Benz went ahead with a coupe version of the GLC, slipped a 3.0 V6 under the hood, and called it AMG. Audi on the other hand, kept to the SUV styling, fiddled with some of the cosmetics (and some) to build their idea of what it should be. With SUVs bringing in the bulk of the car sales, it is no surprise that the German marque is doing its part in rolling out with the punches.

Fake plastic exhaust on bumpers dampens the cool hotness of this sub-zero SUV

The S Q5 gets the same 3.0 V6 twin-scroll turbocharged engine found in the very refined S4 sedan. From where the previous supercharged S Q5 left off, performance figures are actually very similar on paper, with both the old and new car producing 354hp, but the new car delivers 500Nm of torque, 30Nm more than the previous car, and does this at just 1,370rpm, keeping the torque tap on till 4,500rpm, instead of the narrow band of 4,000-4,500rpm delivered by the previous S Q5; making this car more flexible, delivering simply more driving pleasure…. All this, while still attaining the same century timing of 5.4 seconds.

As with many SUVs, the high centre of gravity does not help with the handling, and the S Q5 is no exception, but while there is definitely more body roll versus its S4 sedan. We appreciate how the taller car is still able to stay composed, even with the effects of transitioning, with plenty of weight-shifting, thanks to the five-link suspension in the front and rear, further assisted by the adaptive CDC dampers (continuous damping control), which works together with the engine, steering and transmission, bringing out a well-balanced drive.

Additional driver goodies like Adaptive cruise control (ACC) including traffic jam assist, which also helps steer the car a little in tight traffic situations. We also liked that Audi had included their Cross traffic assist rear, to reduce the possibility of any reversing mishaps, when backing onto a busy street.

Our Thoughts

While there is the vanilla Q5, which is just as well executed, the S Q5 adds another dimension of play to Audi’s SUV offerings. While it might not look as fancy as say, the new Range Rover Velar, it does offer up a little more value from a price point, similar quality in-terms of materials.

While it may just simply blend in with the crowd, there are those who would just want to silently enjoy their car.
