Few names in Singapore’s motoring history resonate like Hong Seh Motors. Once synonymous with the roar of Ferraris and the elegance of Maseratis, the company’s audacious pivot to electric vehicles is nothing short of a paradigm shift. Today, it’s not supercars that bear its badge, but EVs like the Seres 3—a compact SUV aimed squarely at the pragmatic buyer. And while it’s not the flashiest or most refined EV on the market, the Seres 3 carries an understated charm that slowly reveals itself the more time you spend behind the wheel.

Modest Design with a Purpose

At first glance, the Seres 3 may not grab attention like its flashier rivals. Its design leans towards functionality rather than flamboyance—clean, conservative lines, and proportions that prioritize space and practicality. It’s a car that doesn’t seek to impress but rather to blend seamlessly into your daily routine.

Still, there’s a quiet confidence in its simplicity. The Seres 3 doesn't need a bold identity to fulfill its purpose; its appeal lies in being an approachable, unpretentious EV for those who value substance over flash.

Behind the Wheel: The Drive That Grows on You

Driving the Seres 3 is a tale of contrasts. Powered by a 160 hp / 300 Nm electric motor, it handles your daily commutes with ease, offering smooth acceleration and enough responsiveness to dart through city traffic. On highways, however, its limitations become apparent—motor noise creeps in, and while the torque feels adequate, the driving dynamics lack the refinement seen in more polished electric SUVs.

The suspension, while sufficient for Singapore’s relatively smooth roads, struggles with harsher terrain or spirited driving. At higher speeds or on uneven surfaces, the body feels less composed, a trait reminiscent of early-generation EVs. Yet, there’s a certain authenticity to the experience—a car that doesn’t over promise but delivers what’s necessary for everyday use.

Cabin Experience: Function Over Flair

Step into the Seres 3, and you’ll find an interior designed with practicality in mind. Hard plastics and PU leather dominate the cabin, reminding you of its budget-conscious positioning. Yet, it’s not without redeeming qualities. The 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, with Apple CarPlay compatibility, provides modern connectivity, and the panoramic sunroof adds a sense of space and airiness.

The layout is intuitive, and the controls are easy to access, but it’s clear that luxury was not the priority here. Rear-seat passengers enjoy ample legroom, while the boot offers a respectable 490 liters of cargo space—enough for family outings or weekend errands.

Range and Charging: Competitive, If Not Groundbreaking

With an official range of 331 km (WLTP), the Seres 3 does decently well to hold its own among similarly priced EVs. Point A to B trips are handled comfortably, though those pushing the limits of its range may need to plan charging stops. Using an AC wall charger, a full charge takes around eight hours, while DC fast charging allows for a 20%-80% top-up in approximately 30 minutes—again, on par with most of its segment rivals.

The Verdict: A Great Stepping Stone

The Seres 3 may not redefine the electric SUV segment, but it doesn’t need to. It offers a solid, accessible entry point for buyers stepping into the world of EVs. Its quiet competence, coupled with a reasonable enough price tag (of approximately S$160k), makes it a car for the practical-minded—a vehicle that doesn’t boast, but simply works.

For Hong Seh Motors, the Seres 3 marks a stark departure from their high-octane past. But in a market rapidly shifting towards electrification, it’s a bold, necessary move—and one that shows they’re willing to evolve with the times. If the Seres 3 is a sign of things to come, this understated electric SUV might just be the start of a new legacy for the storied brand.
