Porsche Panamera S 3.0 Review: Big is beautiful

Porsche Panamera S 3.0 Review: Big is beautiful

Porsche, like the rest of the auto industry have been caught up in the rising trend of smaller engine capacities. We find out if the new turbocharged V6 takes any fun away from the previous V8 model.

What we like:
pros
The improved exterior design. Supple ride comfort. Excellent cornering dynamics despite the large size and weight.
What we dislike:
cons
It’s a four seater rather than a five seater.

With the adaptive damper settings, the ride comfort of the Porsche can be altered to suit the road conditions. In sports mode, the dampers are hardened for better cornering ability although it translates to a firmer ride but isn’t as firm as that found in a 911. Comfort mode is where the Panamera is most impressive. The damping is controlled but supple and will handle the odd bumps on the expressway well. And with the well-built interior, road and tyre noise are barely audible. Making this large Porsche a perfect road trip companion for those long drives up North.

More importantly, the engine downsizing has made significant gains in consumption figures. From 9.2km/L in the previous V8 model, consumption has been reduced to 11.2km/L in the V6 bi-turbo. There’s also significant reduction in carbon emissions with figures dropping from 254g/km to 208g/km in the current car.

Conclusion

Envisioned as a mid-life update for the model, the changes were significantly enough for Porsche to dub it the Panamera II.

Once you get over the initial shock of losing the V8, the new car will definitely impress with the improved exterior looks as well as overall performance.

Who knew that we would find ourselves lusting after not only the 911 but its larger four door sibling one day?
