Speaking of handling, the nicely weighted steering set up adds further security for that driver who has an enthusiastic streak, and for a car in this class, this is relatively rare. Body-roll is well contained thanks to the double wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension – now, imagine if it gets a torsion beam set up at the rear instead. It probably won’t be this responsive especially when you’re going from one corner to the other… Fast.

The Peugeot 408 may be a little late arriving here, with the German VW Jetta already leading the pack in this hotly-contested midsized sedan segment. To make it even less attractive, the current COE climate isn’t in its favour.

But then again for it’s size, the 408 does offer a lot of car – the cabin is very spacious, boot size commendable, handles well and best of all, has enough power to see off anything else in it’s way.

It’s definitely far more superior than it’s predecessor, presents itself as a good alternative to the usual suspect and at the same time, is a good answer if your priority here is value-for-money…
