One for All
We can say that we are spoilt for choice nowadays, with vehicles coming in so many different shapes and sizes. Even for those who may be hunting for something less-expensive, may succumb to temptation of having something a little more premium. But that isn’t a bad thing at all really. That is where the MINI One comes into play.
Under the hood, a 1.5 litre turbocharged 3-cylinder engine powers the car, which is good for 102hp, while maximum torque of 190Nm is delivered from a low-down 1,380rpm, making this car quite zippy, with the turbocharger not needing much time to spool to its full potential. Its 0-100km/h sprint timing is a rather leisurely 10.5 seconds, with a sweet spot of shove hitting you at around 2,500rpm.
The new 7-speed dual clutch transmission, which also allows the MINI to coast, helps bring about a superb 18.5 km/l combined cycle.
Push the car into “Sport” mode, and the MINI will hold its gears a little longer, and that already lovely-weighted and direct steering gets even more weighted, and pitching the car into turns, does reveal a front-drive car which is poised and balanced, even with its longer (than the 3-door) wheelbase.
While the suspension might come across as slightly firmer-than-average, the ride quality is never jarring, and external noise from the road is minimal, all thanks to some very good sound insulation.
While it may not be as fancy as say, a Countryman, the 5-door hatch does offer some similarities in terms of practicality, and is even more attainable at $104,088, all thanks to the massive drop in Cat A COEs.
