Land Rover Defender 110 3.0 75th Limited Edition Review: Off-Roader With Slick On-Road Charm
This Defender is making green great again.
Grasmere Green is a key colour to the limited edition Defender to celebrate 75 years of Land Rover.
It seems like perfect timing to bring this heritage colour back to the fore. Green is back in vogue, and there is even a ‘Make Green Great Again’ movement.
Undeniably, Grasmere Green has stood the test of time and arguably looks even more chic today. Land Rover has confidently applied the colour to the 20-inch rims as well. As a whole, the eye-catching looks really set off the Defender tremendously.
On the inside, Grasmere Green (albeit powder coated) is also applied to a wide swath of the dashboard that Land Rover calls the Cross Car Beam. On the ends of this Beam, there is laser-etched ‘75 Years’ detailing that you may almost miss if you didn’t take notice.
Dig deeper though and what you will essentially find beneath all of these pretty cosmetic upgrades is a well-equipped Defender that comes standard with a 3D Surround Camera, Configurable Terrain Response, a Meridian Sound System and a Head-Up Display, among others. Aside from the fact that all of these equipment make the 75th limited edition a very complete car, the Defender as a whole has a unique rugged design that’s distinct and “OG”.
All 75th Limited Edition Defenders are powered by the P400 Ingenium mild hybrid petrol engine, and are also mechanically similar to the standard Defender. With the P400, the Defender is surprisingly swift on the go, with a forceful torque curve that makes the car an eager performer. It even sounds rather good on load too, and seems more suited to the Defender somehow compared to the same engine in the Range Rover Sport.
And given all of the off-road prowess of the Defender, its manners on the road is impeccable. Shod with off-road tyres and boasting mountain climbing and river fording ability, the most impressive thing about the Defender is that it’s perfectly at home on the tarmac too. I can totally see the appeal of its Jurassic Park personality paired with little compromise for daily driving.
Land Rover had invited me to test drive this very Defender off-road in Johor, but unfortunately I gave it a miss due to an emergency in the family. But if the car is this good on the road, I have no doubt that my impression will grow even more positively when I get to hustle it along a mud track - next time!
