Hyundai Tuscani Coupe 2.0 Review: Dr Jekyll or Mr Hyde?

Terrifying in many, many ways, of which not all are the wrong kind, the 2007 Hyundai Tuscani proves to the world what Hyundai can do with its cars. Unfortunately though, the car gives out mixed signals for some of us.

So why should you buy it?

Don't get me wrong - it is a good car. You have to remember that. However, it is a little hard to imagine that you're piloting a 2 door coupe given its performance envelope.

After a hard day's worth of driving around, I have to say that, if you have to get this car, get it because it simply looks gorgeous, and that it handles extremely well in day to day situations.

Don't expect it to burn the tarmac silly although fuel consumption figures while our new test car was running in suggest otherwise.

Hyundai put together a package that works. It isn't extraordinary, but my guess is that this is what the general public, who doesn't need the extra expense in enginnering a fast car, but wants a nice looking, sporty coupe, wants.

It's price tag is relatively reasonable for a 2 litre class car. Blatantly put, a Honda Civic 2.0 Si lists for just about $3000 more, but it has slightly higher insurance premiums. It has four doors, goes a whole lot faster, and it consumes less petrol.

In this car, the insurance won't kill you if you're a fresh graduate in your 20s, and it does come with a few niceties like power assited disc brakes with full, floating calipers, a vehicle stability system that keeps you on traction (ESP) and independent suspension with McPherson fronts.

The interior isn't lacking either. You get a really nice sounding Pioneer 6850 head unit that is high quality audio ready for all you In Car Entertainment (ICE) fans. The sunroof works pretty well and it is a welcome surprise to those who love the novelty.

Then there is leather stitching on the steering wheel, which by the way is pretty enough for me to want to transplant it into the Hyundai that I own, as well as lovely leather seats that do not look cheap in any way.

The luggage compartment is extraordinary - there is a cargo net and a good amount of space to be found, as well as a lovely blue, luminiscent lighting from the instruments.

You weight the pros and cons - this car has magnificent potential. What a pity though, that we don't get the 5 speed manual here in Singapore.
