Hyundai Elantra 1.6 GL Review: Fluid classic
Three years since it was launched here, the fifth generation Elantra is now up for a timely facelift. We find out if its beauty has gone skin deep…
Road noise isn’t significantly louder than other competitors in this segment but ride comfort is a tad harder than preferred. There’s an edge to the damping that doesn’t seem appropriate for a family sedan. But in the bends, the harder suspension does pay off with less lean.
Though cornering performance is helped by the suspension, it is let down by vague steering feel. Pushing the drive mode button on the steering wheel activates ‘Sport’ mode and adds weight to the steering but does little for feel and accuracy.
The improvements in this latest update are minor but have not dulled the Elantra from being a well-rounded package in this segment. But does it stand toe to toe with the Toyota Corolla?
It is nevertheless a convincing argument against the Japanese contender and will beat the Corolla hands down in a beauty contest. But with all factors considered, the Elantra has some ways to go in interior build quality and ride comfort.
