Honda CR-Z Mugen Review: Green and Mean

Honda CR-Z Mugen Review: Green and Mean

Being green does not mean one cannot be mean, Honda’s CR-Z sports coupe offers the best of both worlds with a sporty personality and reduced thirst as Jonathan Tan found out.

What we like:
pros
The new aggressively sporty Aero package and Mugen sports suspension. Sharp handling and firm ride.
What we dislike:
cons
Poor rear visibility and impractical rear seats that serve no practical purpose

The CR-Z’s cool factor may have been boosted with the addition of a hybrid green fuel cap, Mugen carbon fibre gear knob and floor mats with stitched Mugen logos, but Honda’s intuitively designed interior dashboard layout still impresses the most.

Designed around the driver, the dashboard layout lets the driver get brow-beaten into driving efficiently by way of the Eco-coaching in the CR-Z. Using red, green and blue lights on the dash to correspond to the way the car is being driven helps the car visually persuade the driver to try and achieve that published 20km/L fuel efficiency.

Apart from that, the car still has very limited space in the rear with the two passenger seats for more show than for any practical purpose. Not that it would really matter in this case. Visibility in the rear still requires some getting used to because of the split rear window. Factor in the size of the rear wing and that challenge intensifies.

As a whole, the Honda CR-Z Mugen is a good car made even better. Receiving esthetic and performance enhancements will boost its appeal amongst prospective buyers in search of a car suited for a dynamic yet environmentally conscious lifestyle.

With the base car priced at $142,900 with COE, the added value of the free $6,500 Aero Package and $5,000 Sports Package should entice buyers to make a jump for the car. Only the first three six-speed manual CR-Zs booked will receive both the Mugen Sports and Aero packages absolutely free while the first ten cars (the earlier three cars mentioned, included) will receive the Aero kit free-of-charge.
