For Thou Art Eon

Volkswagen’s new Arteon may have taken the company’s new design language up a few notches. Where it gets to me is how the car draws the stares from people as I step out of it… or did I just have another of my bad hair days… But in all honesty, the Arteon’s only similarity to the car it replaces is in terms of styling is in its four-doored coupe box it sits in, and we believe presents a vast improvement over the CC. But then again, the Arteon was not intended only as a CC replacement, but a car more importantly fielded to up the game for Volkswagen.

What we like:
pros
Great styling
pros
Performance and handling
pros
Practical cargo room
What we dislike:
cons
Heads-up display panel is too close to the driver
cons
should have used the windshield projection type instead

The 2.0 turbocharged straight-four delivers an impressive 280ps, about 10 short of the Golf R, and with 350Nm of twist, with a generous spread from 1,700rpm to 5,600rpm. Mated to a 7-speed DSG transmission and driving all wheels, the Arteon delivers handling which comes across as front-biased to neutral.

Volkswagen has also included their Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) package into this car, featuring a unique slider-style virtual adjuster, which allows drivers to adjust the firmness of the ride, and more importantly, the handling. Going with what the Arteon was intended for, most drivers would likely leave the car to decide on this bag of tricks. After all, this is no Golf R, but rather something you would want to cruise a little more in… even if the century sprint is an impressive 5.6 seconds. The Audi A5 for that matter does the same in 6 seconds, and its higher-performing S5 sibling with the 3.0 V6 in 4.7 seconds…

Steering feel is spot-on, with a sweet turn-in, and to those who are familiar, it does feel quite similar to how a Golf would handle, albeit a little more relaxed, rather than the Audi A5, with its North-South mounted engine, and slightly more rear-biased drive.

Our Thoughts

We have quite recently taken the KIA Stinger out for a spin, and the only thing similar would be its coupe-like styling. In drawing a comparison drive-wise, the Stinger delivers more old-school rear-wheel drive and squat, which in-turn feels a little more GRAND-Tourer, while the Arteon comes across as a large Golf, direct and accurate… Which is not a bad thing right?

Even with its upmarket intent, as we truly love how practical a car it still is, and it truly on the road, it is easy to live with.
