The previous 5008 came across as a proper MPV. Proper, meant also that it did not leave much of an impression. Perhaps Peugeot product people heard that one loud and clear, and now have returned with a SUV-inspired MPV, or would this be an MPV-inspired SUV? Whichever way it is, one cannot deny, that it does have an ‘X’ factor about it, with styling clearly reflecting Peugeot’s new and edgier design language, and perhaps the French may have a thing or two to show the competition, when it comes to being chic.
The 5008 gets two engine choices over here. There is a 1.2 three cylinder turbocharged engine with a healthy 230Nm, and rated at a humble 129hp. Just sufficient we believe, if you have no need for the added power.
The four-cylinder turbocharged 1.6 on our test car was good for 163hp. With slightly more twist of 10Nm, compared to the 1.2 litre’s 230Nm, and is available from a low-down 1,400rpm. The seven-seater Pug proves to be an easy car to live with, be it highway cruising or even in start-stop rush hour situations, loaded or just you alone.
The 9.2 second 0-100km/h sprint timing is nothing to shout about, and the 5008 does not like to be rushed. The six-speed automatic which drives only the front wheels delivers well on spaced-out ratios, but could otherwise be a little smoother on delivery.
Slightly artificial and vague steering feel plagues the car, but on the flip side, the 5008 was never intended to be a driver’s machine. Having said that, the Pug does take to corners surprisingly well, given its size, and 1,651mm overall height.
Road noise is minimal, and among the better ones we have come across, and first and second row seats are by far one of the more comfortable ones we have sunken our bottoms into, which adds to the already good ride comfort.
Added active safety features like speed limit information, which comes useful when within a speed-check zone. Lane departure, front collision and blind spot monitoring helps to keep the car in-check, and also adds an added layer of safety.
The infotainment unit does feature a 360 view when parking, but compared to German brands, imagery is not as clear, and is not as logical, especially when you have those crucial last few inches to go, and the system switches your view.
The 5008 adds some style to what could have essentially been a boring seven-seater. While it is refreshing in looks, the Pug could have been slightly better engineered, and the interior bits and bobs could fit together a little better.
The 360 camera is good to have, and would have been a top draw among the long list of goodies, but we feel was poorly executed.
Where it does shine though, is in how comfortable a ride it really is.
