Even Better for the Family Man
For those who believe that a safe choice is always a good thing, there have been many generations of who have been keen buyers of a Corolla. The facelifted car faithfully carries on with it all the values of what had made previous generations an international best seller. Even now, with market interests leaning towards the SUV/Crossover, the sheer numbers of this compact sedan on the road signify how close to the heart the values of “reliability”, and that “you cannot go wrong with this car” are to buyers.
An improved Dual VVTI Valvematic engine now generates 128bhp and 160Nm of twist, about a 7bhp increase over the old engine, and you get an added 6Nm of torque too, all this from improved variable valve operation.
The CVT-i transmission is an improvement, helping to deliver a smooth drive, while the characteristic CVT whine is not very noticeable. Another plus, is that the engine does work more in tandem with the CVT this time, with previous engine, you could feel it working hard first, and then the CVT subsequently catching up with the engine speed.
Toyota claims an improvement in handling, and that revised suspension does make the car ride well. The 2,700mm of wheelbase does provide a good distance between front and rear wheels for ride comfort, and it is rather difficult to upset the handling of the car, all thanks to the driver safety nets in-place. The steering is a little too light for our liking, but most family cars in this sector often feel like that.
The Corolla Altis is an excellent family workhorse, especially for those who find reason for not shelling out extras for something a little fancier.
The added safety features, and improved handling are great valuable extras for a mid-life facelift.
