EDITOR'S PICKS - The Best Cars for Selfish Singles

Known in China as the “bare sticks holiday” because of how 11 looks numerically, Singles Day started out as a protest against Valentines’ Day by Nanjing University students in the 1990s, as a day where they celebrated their singlehood. In this editor’s picks, we’re presenting some coupes, perfect for singles this November 11.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe C 63 S AMG ideal for singles who like the good ol' vanilla compact-sized C Class Coupe body, but with a little more omph. The wheel arches are flared out, and the underneath is equipped with new arms to house that glorious wider track. Plus, the addition of the 19 inch twin-spoked rims (you can also choose to spec 20 inch rear rims if you like), which fill up the wheel arches, leaving just enough gap for visual balance.

Under the hood, the new M117 is a smaller, but worthy successor. Bi-turbocharged, and dishing out 510hp (on paper), we believe that there could be just a little more. Its torque is at an astonishing 700Nm, staying within a wide band from 1,750rpm to 4,500rpm.

The V8 has great insulation; it is quiet, with only a slight burble just audible from within the cabin. The interior looks almost like a standard C-Class but packed with some carbon fibre trim, a few AMG tags, and loud red seatbelt straps to constantly remind you how special the car is, and it is. Its front bucket seats get mechanical belt forwarders, which makes putting on the belts much easier. Due to the lower roofline and more upright position, the rear seats offer less accommodation as compared to the sedan, and are really for +2 seating.

Flicking the car into “Race” mode brings immediate change to the drive. The exhaust flaps open up, electromagnets linked to the suspension dampers switch on to full, and your ride is now ultra sensitive when going over tiny bugs on the road. Throttle response is also quick and accurate. The bi-turbocharged 4.0 V8 delivers a century sprint in just 3.9 seconds. The rear locking differential ensures that there is minimal wheel slippage, while the seven-speed automatic does the job of feeding power into the wheels.

In all, the C 63 is really one of the best ways to package a V8, driving nothing but the rear wheels.

With 6 coupes in this editor’s picks, perhaps 11/11 is the time to sell your old ride, and get one of these cars to fully indulge in the carefree single lifestyle!
