Die Wahre Sonderklasse
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has long been seen as a benchmark to how a luxury sedan should be built, but it really is much more than that. For the longest time, the car has been seen as the iconic “I have made it” statement, and the facelifted car in our opinion makes it clear why the S-Class can garner such a large following.
The interior is hard-to-beat, especially for passengers at the rear, with individual reclining seats. Supple Nappa leather for the seats and door panels, the use of ambient lighting (64 colours in all) and the car’s use of a high-end 3D surround sound Burmester audio system, adds to the mix of creature spoils, which has always been a draw for the S-Class owner.
Up in-front, their widescreen cockpit consists of two 12.3” screens, one as the driver’s instrument binnacle, and the other the infotainment display. Drivers are also able to customise their display, between “Classic”, “Sporty” and “Progressive”, changing the style of the dials, and are also able to configure the information to be displayed to them. In aiding drivers to keep their hands on the wheel, and eyes on the road, the steering wheel also incorporates touch-sensitive controls.
All of this comes together to cocoon occupants in a very different environment, notable when you pop the doors open and step out of the car.
The S-Class is a car which sets the benchmark from where comparisons are made. Where it is intended to lean towards a comfortable drive, from where the ride and driving qualities of other makes are often compared to; it always comes across as matured (and never seen as a car which has grown-up). And this is perhaps why the S-Class tends to lead in its class.
