Cupra Born e-Boost First Drive Review: Born with an Edge
The electric hatchback is Volkswagen’s ID.3 in pretty clothes and tuned for the driver.

Cupra’s first electric car is the Born, launched a few years ago but only arriving to our shores now.

It is based on the Volkswagen ID. 3, itself styled similarly as an electric hatchback. Thankfully, Volkswagen doesn’t bring the ID. 3 into Singapore, so the Born faces no competition from its sister brand.

Instead, it enters the ring against cars like the BYD Dolphin and the Ora Good Cat. Although there are less competitors in this segment, the offerings go for flamboyant appeal and unique design.
The Born thankfully sings the same tune, bringing to the table distinctive design that makes the ID.3 look plain Jane. With its dark blue paintwork and copper elements, it would surely turn heads.

The interior also has surprisingly sporty elements, like bucket seats in a suede-like finish as well as a thin-rimmed steering wheel. The petrol blue colour contrasts well with black and copper elements too, putting you in the mood for enthusiastic driving.
With up to 231 PS with the e-Boost function activated, the Born is more GTI than mere Golf. It is quick enough to be classified as a hot hatch, although it doesn’t particularly drive like one. Steering is precise, but braking feel is a tad numb. The chassis is competent but doesn’t really enthuse one to drive spiritedly.
Our first impressions are that the Born already feels a bit of its age compared to the newer Tavascan. Given how much electric cars can progress within a short span of time, the Born may remain quite a niche vehicle. Cupra understands this, which is why it’s focusing its efforts on the Tavascan instead.
