Collective Soul

The Carrera T is a spiritual reincarnation of the original 911 T which was introduced in 1968, a time when their engines were still air-cooled and pushrods (which made that distinctive clatter) were still available in some of their other car’s engines.

What we like:
pros
Little bits and bobs gives the Carrera T its own unique identity. Lovely performance and balance. Rear engine magic ensures plenty of grip.
What we dislike:
cons
Look once… look twice… looks like any other Carrera
cons
until you play spot the differences.

Porsche had reduced the amount of sound insulation, which is evident whenever you pass over loose bits of gravel on the road, where you can clearly hear them being kicked into the rear wheel arches. And while the 3.0 at the rear, with its twin turbo charges does come across as somewhat muted, they do sound lovely with every time you are a little heavier on the throttle. The firm suspension a constant reminder of what this car is truly built for, though they are livable enough for daily usage.

The steering is well-weighted with the car offering nice and tight point-and shoot accuracy, and with plenty of grip to spare from the rear, thanks to that flat-six sitting between the rear wheels, pressing rubber harder onto tarmac.

You will also often have that nagging temptation to reach for the paddle shifters to work the PDK gearbox your way. In a way, you can sense that the Carrera T would be happiest during a track day, where you can take full advantage of all that grip, and where all the driver safety nets can come out to play, that is if you overwork the car a little too much. As a daily driver, the car feels civilised and easy to live with. It does come across visually perhaps a little less vulgar as a GT3, and just a tad more aggressive than a Carrera S.

Our Thoughts

Well it is a 911… one of the 24 available, and one of 9 Carrera models. You know, the ones without the fancy wing at the rear.

So what makes this one special? Would it be because it is as special as the one built back in’68? We certainly think not, even with its “weight saving” door opening cords.

But I strongly believe that among Porsche aficionados, who have this much love for a brand which has been for over 50 years, fettling with the same form, slowly evolving this rear-engined icon. The Carrera T is to me collectively the sum of a few different 911s… And in a round-about way they have in-fact created a milder “GT3”. Wickedly insane!
