BMW Z4 sDrive28i Review: Surprise package

Always liked the Z4 but put off by the big engine? Fret not - a smaller-engined, more efficient 2.0-litre variant is now available

What we like:
pros
More pocket-friendly now
pros
punchy but with good fuel economy
pros
still one of the best roadster to drive money can buy.
What we dislike:
cons
Engine refinement could be better
cons
obvious wind noise at three-figure speeds
cons
not as sharp as a Boxster.

Like the top of the range Z4, the sDrive28i comes with ‘Driving Experience Control’, letting the driver choose both the throttle and steering response between ‘Comfort’ and ‘Sport’. While you can switch off the traction control, any attempts to indulge in some tail-sliding mischief will be thwarted by the fact that it will kick in automatically when it detects the car losing control. Such a party pooper…

The Z4 sDrive28i really proves that BMW can still produce a roadster that’s properly balanced with brilliant pace. With this 2.0-litre engine, it also shows that BMW remains a tour de force – they know what buyers need and aptly deliver it, rather than just filling up a segment.

Truthfully speaking, if you want a Z4 so much, this is the variant to go for.
