BMW X3 xDrive35i Review: Instant redemption

With the new X3, memories of the ugly duckling first generation version can finally be banished.

Inside, the X3's cabin offers the typical BMW driver orientated interior architecture. The dash features instruments that are shared with the 5 Series while the ergonomically sound centre console features a large LCD screen for the iDrive operating system.

At the rear, passengers will appreciate the generous amounts of head and shoulder room available. Both up front and at the rear the X3's interior offers a multitude of large storage compartments, trays and cup holders while the boot is impressively well sized, with a volume of between 550 and 1,600 litres available, which BMW claims is the best in the segment.

While the outgoing X3 was built by Magna Steyr in Austria, the new car is built at the same Spartanburg plant where X5s and X6s are built in the US state of South Carolina. Build quality and perceived luxury levels inside are commendable indeed.

To justify its premium positioning and price tag, the xDrive35i is comprehensively equipped. It comes standard with bi-Xenon headlamps with daytime running lights, a panoramic glass sunroof that runs almost the entire length if the roof, two-zone climate control, iDrive, an electrically operated tailgate, sat nav, Bluetooth handsfree kit, cruise control and so on.

As I never drove the previous X3, I wouldn't know how much a step forward this new X3 is over its ungainly looking predecessor but what I can conclude is that the new model definitely offers the best handling dynamics in the class, and in xDrive35i guise, is a seriously quick performance SUV to boot. It comes at a price but the X3 could well be the new segment leader.
